New iPad Pro pairs to Bluetooth Xbox One Controller but Doesn't Work

I have a brand new iPad Pro (2020) 12.9" that I'm trying to use an xbox one (model 1708) controller with. I can pair the controller fine but it still doesn't work with controller enabled apps (Apple TV, call of duty mobile, etc.). Here's the rundown:

  • iPad is running the latest iPadOS 13.4.1
  • Xbox controller running the latest firmware (4.8.1923.0) and is bluetooth compatible
  • Xbox controller works fine via bluetooth and USB on both the xbox console and Win10 PC
  • I have restarted the iPad, paired the controller several times, and reset the iPad
  • The iPad quickly pairs to the controller without issue but the controller still doesn't work.

I've searched apple, MS, youtube, & reddit trying to find answers or some additional troubleshooting steps but am coming up empty. I was going to reach out to apple chat support but it appears to not be working at this time. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for the response. I had already reviewed the support document and confirmed that it does not apply to the issue that I am having. Below are my responses in bold/italics to each of the troubleshooting steps outlined in that specific document:

Get started

  • Starting with iOS 13, iPadOS 13tvOS 13, and macOS Catalina, Apple devices and computers support pairing with and using Xbox and PlayStation wireless game controllers.  As stated, iPadOS is current on my device
  • If you need to update the firmware on your controller, check with your game controller manufacturer. My controller has the most recent firmware update
  • Check that you’re in range of your device and there isn’t interference in the area. The iPad and controller are 3' from each other and there's not other bluetooth devices enabled or in close proximity. The controller actually pairs to the iPad but doesn't function

See which wireless controllers are supported

  • Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708) As stated, my controller is the 1708 model

Pair or unpair a controller with your iOS device

  1. Begin with your controller turned off. Then to put your controller in pairing mode:
    • With an Xbox Wireless Controller, press the Xbox button to turn on the controller. Then press and hold the Connect button for a few seconds. I have already done these steps, controller successfully pairs to iPad, just doesn't function. Controller functions fine when connected to xbox console and Win10 PC via bluetooth or USB
  1. On your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, tap Settings.  I paired successfully
  2. Select Bluetooth and check that it's turned on. I paired successfully
    • To pair, find the name of your controller under Other Devices. Tap the name to connect.  I paired successfully
    • To unpair, tap Information  next to the name of the device, then tap Forget This Device.  I've also tried forgetting device and pairing a second, third, & fourth time. Each time, controller pairs successfully

If your controller won't connect or doesn't work as expected

  • Unpair it, then pair it again. If you still can't pair or connect, get help pairing your Bluetooth accessory to your iOS deviceI've tried this, it pairs successfully, controller still doesn't function
  • Make sure that you're not trying to connect too many Bluetooth accessories at once. Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support up to two controllers at once, and other Bluetooth limits vary by device.  Only other device paired with iPad is magic mouse and I even removed it and tried again with no other bluetooth devices connected
  • Some controller functions aren't supported when paired with an Apple device, including the controller's audio jack. Contact Apple Support for more details.  This document confirms my controller model 1708 should work. I tried reaching out to Apple Support and their online chat isn't working which is the reason I posted here.

Any other suggestions or troubleshooting documents?
