Migration from old MacBook Air to new MacBook Air

I have a new MacBook Air and need to migrate everything from my "old" MacBook Air. I will be using the Migration Assistant. Is it better to do the migration Mac-to-Mac or should I migrate using Time Machine. My "old" computer is very up-to-date.

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.14

A Few Thoughts...

I. I'd Restore from the TMB:

Based on prior experience form having data, I'd go with migrating this from the Time Machine Backup. But, prior to performing this migration, create a Time Machine Backup of this new Mac, itself.

II. Backing Up the New Mac:

Use an external Hard Drive, at least 1.5 the storage capacity. Next, create the Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the MigrationGo Here: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

III. To Re-obtain Software Licenses:

Contact developers, should you need to install something. Perhaps, inform them that your Mac went dead, and you have transferred it over. Request a new install. But, get a 64bit installation key, as Catalina is only compatible with 64bit software.

Hi RBH12345,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. It sounds like you want to use Migration Assistant to get your data onto a new MacBook Air.

Either way will work, but it may be faster to use Time Machine if you have that option. If you use Wi-Fi to migrate between the computers, it would be dependent on your Wi-Fi speed. Traffic on your home network can slow that down.

Have a look at: How to move your content to a new Mac.

Have a fantastic day!
