Hello,

According to the Canon Pixma TS9150 UK support page (with macOS 10.13 High Sierra selected), "This product is compatible with the operating system selected using AirPrint only - a driver is not required". The Pixma TS9150 is an AirPrint-enabled printer.

Which Canon printer model is it?

Does it say AirPort, or possibly AirPrint? AirPort is a name used by Apple for wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity. AirPrint is a way to print without the need for special software (drivers).

Every iMac capable of running macOS 10.13 has built-in Wi-Fi hardware.

Which iMac model/year do you have?

With your printer connected directly to your Mac by USB, you would not need either an AirPort or AirPrint to be able to print to it. This printer has a number of methods to connect to it:

  • USB (you posted that this is the method that you are currently using ... is that correct?)
  • Ethernet
  • Wireless

It would also require that your iMac is running macOS 10.12 Sierra or higher ... is it?

If your goal is to only use your iMac to print to this printer, then having it connected by USB is perfectly fine. Your Mac should recognize the printer and select the correct model. Does it? That is, if you go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, does your printer show up?

The other option, if you want to share this printer over a wireless network, the printer could be configured to join the same wireless network that your other computers use. In that case, and as Jan Hedlund is referring to, this printer is AirPrint-enabled. That means you should be able to print to it from an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, etc.), as well as, from your iMac.

Then AirPrint is not worth pursuing.

If it is already showing up in System Preferences, then macOS "sees" it. For example, I have an HP OfficeJet that has both printing and scanning capability. My printer shows up like this in System Preferences:

Although, at the moment, it is powered-off, and thus, shows as "Offline." I also have it set as my default printer ... as you can see, I have two other printers available.

When do you get the "need Airport" message?

Hi,

It appears as if many modern printers can work with IPP over USB. A note on the web page https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/printing-innovations/mobile-printing/airprint?cm_sp=pi-_-mobile-printing-_-airprint says that "A printer connected to Mac running MacOS X 10.9 or later supports AirPrint via USB connection". An HP article https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04086321 mentions USB in connection with AirPrint. Furthermore, page 227 in the TS9100 series (PDF) User Manual (Mac) at https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/fax__multifunctionals/inkjet/pixma_ts_series/pixma-ts9150.html?type=manuals&language= has a piece of information about (AirPrint and) USB Multifunction.

This is all a bit confusing, but I wonder whether the difficulties with MelMac60's Pixma TS9150 (connected via USB), somehow, were related to what was in the "Use" menu (under "Add"). If necessary, and if applicable, could it possibly be worth trying to add the printer with different settings?
