I have many music cds that I would listen to if they were on my new iPad. Can it be done? Do they take up a lot of memory? Or what may be a better way for downloading them so I can then get rid of the cds as they’re taking up a lot of space in our small home.

Give Apple Music a try. There is a free 3-month trial subscription. Your iPad has a native Music app. For your Chromebook and Samsung tablet there is an Apple Music app available on the Google Play store. Apple also has an Music web app.
I've thousands of CDs collecting dust in storage and use an Apple Music subscription instead. I've yet to find an album in my collection that I can't find on Apple Music.

You would need to import the CD’s contents on a Macintosh or Windows PC then synchronize your iPad with that computer.
