Preparing to move messages

Lately I have noticed that the mail app on my Mac mini (late 2012) running latest version of Catalina is trying to move mail messages when I am only tapping or scrolling through to look at a particular email message. I am not sure what it is trying to do 'moving' my mail messages when I didn't actually try to move, delete, or do anything but re-read a particular email that is already marked as read. Anyone have any information regarding this please let me know. After 5 minutes now it still says "preparing to move messages 8 of 8 completed" and is apparently frozen.Thanks.

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

I had a similar issue, with my Mail stuck on "Moving Messages" in Catalina. One of my IMAP accounts was stuck on this and apparently trying to move the same 4 messages.

If nothing else has worked for you, you can try reindexing the entire mail database. I did it with the following method:

  • Get out of the mail app & go to the Finder
  • Hit the command+shift+g & go to the path: ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/
  • Delete all the files that begin with Envelope Index (MAKE A BACKUP of these files before deleting)
  • Close the MailData Window & then Relaunch the Mail App to force re-indexing.

It took a while to re-download all the messages in my IMAP accounts (I had a lot). but after that the issue was cleared. HTH!

Hey chicaMc,

Based on your post it appears you’re unable to scroll through and read emails as expected using macOS. Your emails are seemingly moving, and you’re stuck with that message using Mail. Is that right? I’ll be happy to help out.

Have you tried force quitting Mail or restarting your Mac?

Are you using a POP account or an IMAP account with macOS Mail?

Log out, sleep, restart, or shut down your Mac

Do you have multiple email accounts set up?

If so, does this happen with multiple accounts?

If possible, I would also recommend testing in and out of safe mode. Safe mode will clear the system cache, and attempt to repair any directory related issues. Keep me updated on the results.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Regards.
