Connect Macbook air (A1465) to HDMI monitor

I purchased an HDMI monitor to connect my Macbook Air (A1465). I purchased a miniDP to HDMI cable to make the connection. I get intermittent connectivity to the monitor. It will work and then when i disconnect the cable and reconnect the monitor will not get signal. Should the cable work on it's own or do I need a miniDP to HDMI connector and then connect HDMI to HDMI?
