Automatic desktop-shifting in Catalina

I've noticed that in some apps such as Preview and Word for Mac, if you have two windows of the app open in different desktops, and if you close one of the windows, the desktop automatically shifts to the one with the other window in it. I'm not sure of exactly why it happens because I can't replicate it all the time, but it happens very frequently when doing tedious file management and it just makes it that much more tedious to switch back to the space you were trying to work in. Is there a way to stop it from doing this?
