No sound on FaceTime! What am I doing wrong?

I can't get sound on FaceTime. They can hear me but I can't hear them. I have sound for videos etc. just no sound on FaceTime .

There was some setting somewhere I used awhile back to get this working after years of frustration and feeling it was such a wasted feature. You can see the audio bar bouncing but no sound comes through. The phone says it's redirecting sound to the computer but no sound can be heard. It's sooooo close.

Everything else works fine on both devices.

Where is the hidden setting to hear the sound?

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.14

Here's the solution: on the laptop's Facetime -> Video menu there is an item called Output which contains the various *audio* output devices. On my system there is an external monitor without speakers connected, but apparently there *could* be speakers, so it redirects there. Sending it directly to the MacBook speakers fixes the issue.

Oh how frustrating to google all day long to find a solution! The reason this has been consistency non-functional is that I don't typically have my MacBook open to use to make/receive calls unless I'm home or at work at which I'm usually connected to an external monitor. If I'm at a coffee shop or an airport, I just have my phone handy and use it.

I think it's a bug that FaceTime doesn't simply use the same output as the rest of the system.
