Apple watch storage full

Hello,

For the past 3 month I'm having this issue where my watch 3 series has no space left. This did not happen over time, it happen one day, pretty random.

Checking the storage, the largest app is Nike Run, 22 mb.

No music, no podcasts, no photos on the watch.

I did a hard reset a few times, nothing helped.

I believe the problem is something on my iphone, but I'm trying to avoid a reset.

Any ideas?

Apple Watch Series 3, watchOS 6

I think I may have done it!!! Finally! Some of you know how far I have already been to fix it, but I have gotten further this time!

Here goes I’ll talk through it as best I can....

1.) reset watch completely via watch, erasing all data and settings

2.) I decided to sign out of iCloud on my phone (yes a lot of my information was removed from my phone but still available on the cloud),

3.) link watch to iPhone again whilst not using iCloud, from this I was able to link watch to iPhone and update to latest software without the error message “not enough capacity” setting up as new

the watch now is not linked to iCloud

4.) I have waited for 24 hours before resigning in to iCloud on iPhone, purely because I didn’t get time to beforehand, but sign back into icloud (can’t imagine it’s make much difference doing it after 5 hours rather than 24)

5.) watch will then ask to log into iCloud - I pressed cancel for this...... what really does the iwatch need from the cloud?

messages come through, activity is still tracked, Facebook comes through etc etc

the iCloud is definitely the issue - believe it to be shortcuts so if someone wants to link back to cloud ensure shortcuts are turned off on cloud storage - this may work but I’m happy with how far I’ve got and a working watch with 3.7 gb capacity still available

if anyone has any questions about specific things being accessed I can try on my watch beforehand if you’d like

you’re welcome 😇

Update! With fingers crossed I think it may be fixed. I got a walk-up appointment at an Apple Store and they erased all content and settings by holding down the crown and side button until a menu option comes up to do so. After it unpairs, remove the watch from your Watch app and pair again. Apparently when unpairing regularly, it doesn’t erase misc data (like a bug that leaves old software that takes up a lot of room). Will report back if the message comes back within the week.

I have been having this problem since May. I have talked to Apple support a dozen times, unpaired and repaired, and finally went to Best Buy and they were unable to fix it. Apple support told me the same "we are aware of the problem" "wait for an update", but also told that my Apple ID could be corrupt. I have not gone through the trouble of changing my Apple ID, hoping the next update will fix it. I am so glad to know that i am not the only person experiencing this, it is so frustrating!

Thanks for the update! It definitely seems like it’s a iCloud sync issue, which is so hard for any of us to fix, and apparently hard for Apple to fix, too... ugh!

Coincidentally I was going to post last night because notifications were delayed on mine so I restarted my phone and watch and then immediately got the dreaded Storage Full message - this after it was hanging in there all this time as I had just posted. I unpaired and repaired from a backup this time and I’m back to 3.2GB available, so we’ll see how long it lasts.

Whomever speaks with a Genius next should inquire about how fixing bugs in iCloud goes... though it’s still strange that it seems to be only Series 3 Watches.

Thanks for the response, glicky63. I noticed that too...that this issue only seems to be affecting the Series 3 watches.

I just unpaired & re-paired my watch to my phone this morning as well.

I'm up to 3.2GB of storage as well (for now). And as an fyi, I ended up resetting up in watch twice in 3 days this this week.

Also the Settings on my watch are showing 14 photos, however in reality I know I only have 6 photos saved to my Favorites folder to use as Watch faces.

I'm crossing my fingers that Watch OS 7 will fix this issues.

I didn't have enough room to install so I had to unpair, repair, then download Watch OS7. Right before I unpaired, I had 2.0GB being used, down to 729MB with 2.6GB displayed separately as Software Update after repairing, then back up to 1.8GB used after installed Watch OS7.

This is what it's been hovering at with no additional apps, so looks like Watch OS7 did not provide a fix. It's clearly old software and/or iCloud data syncing issue if Smiley-34 is seeing this come in while charging overnight. That was where my mystery storage was showing up, as well. Smiley-34, I would try a full unpair and repair as new.

It's infuriating to know they're still selling Series 3 (with some improvements) and that they're aware of this issue. I'm temped to trade in for a Watch SE, but too frustrated at the moment to give Apple more money and risk I'll still have an issue.
