Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with Dell u3419w monitor

I am trying to route my mid 2010 MacBook Pro display through a dell u3419w monitor using a mini dp to dp cable. The MacBook Pro recognizes the dell display and even behaves like there is a second display available to it (mouse pointer disappears out of the primary screen, it allows me to view the “arrangement” tab under display settings etc) but the DELL monitor insists it is “not receiving a DP signal from the device” and it remains blank.

I’ve been through the standard trouble shooting tips - none these address the issue.

is there something I’m missing? Anyone had similar issues and successfully fixed this?

Any help really appreciated.

Hey,

Checked the connections, Monitor input source set correctly to DP, unplugged and replugged the entire set up multiple times, confirmed DELL firmware is up to date, the mini DP - to - DP cable is brand new. Just so confused that the Mac is making all the right noises but the DELL display doesn’t yield.

I have a second laptop that is a windows laptop that is connected to the HDMI port of the same DELL monitor and that one works just fine.

I haven’t yet tried the HDMI port for the MacBook as I don’t have the right adapter as we speak.

1) Do you think that a MacBook Pro as old as mine (mid 2010 13”) is incapable of outputting to DP and that HDMI is the best way to go?

2) I have ordered a third party miniDP-to-HDMI adapter and that should be with me in 3-4 days. In case that doesn’t work as well, is it possible that the DELL monitor simply isn’t compatible with the MacBook and that the only remaining option is for me to return it?

thanks a ton.
