Iphone XR black screen with voice over on

My daughters iPhone XR suddenly went black, then when she tried the volume up, volume down, right button hard restart, it showed the apple, then started talking in voice over. It will show the lock screen for a short amount of time, then go black. It will not hard restart, and iTunes does not recognize that it is plugged in. Any suggestions on what is wrong and a solution?

iPhone XR, iOS 13

Hello iphonefixinmom,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that your daughter's iPhone XR is stuck with a black screen while using VoiceOver. You've done a great job trying to get this resolved. I'm happy to help.

It's possible Screen Curtain has been enabled with VoiceOver. This feature allows you to turn off the display for added privacy on the device.

"To turn Screen Curtain on or off by gesture:

  1. Wake your device.
  2. With three fingers, quickly triple-tap the screen. If the Zoom feature is in use with VoiceOver, tap the screen four times with three fingers.

If you use a bluetooth keyboard with your device, press Control-Option-Shift-S to turn Screen Curtain on or off."

Use Screen Curtain with VoiceOver for your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch

If the issue persists, the remaining steps in the following resources can help:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen

If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Have a nice day!
