My iPhone 14 Pro Max won't turn on

I charged my iPhone before I went to bed and woke up, and it's a black screen and won't turn on. I've tried clicking on the volume +/ - and power button sequence to no avail. Doing a quick online search others are experiencing this issue as well, and is some Apple bug. Not really sure what to do other than having to visit an Apple Store to get it wiped and OS reinstalled. How frustrating..

This is the first time I've experience the issue, the first week I got the iPhone I did experience a power cycle once.

I had the same issue, no power, black screen, couldn't turn it on. What is even stranger, is when I went to look for my iPhone in FindMy Device, it had indicated it had been off for 6 hours which would have been midnight at the change of the month from January to February. My alarm never went off on my phone this morning, obviously. I never received messages overnight, obviously. And if there would have been an emergency for me or from a family member trying to get in touch with me, I would have been screwed. Not sure what the bug is, Apple, but it's a bug that y'all need to get fixed and understood and fast. Missing an alarm to get up in the morning...not the worst possible thing that could happen but it did put a lot of stress on all of us this morning trying to get out the door. The good news and happy ending to the story is that I did the steps as listed, way deep in this forum (which by the way, I couldn't look up on my phone because it wouldn't turn on 🙄), however, the steps worked.

  1. Quick tap on volume up button
  2. Quick tap on volume down button
  3. Hold long side button down for a good minute until the Apple Symbol appears (I took my phone out of it's mag-safe case to do all this since it is easier to push the phone buttons and know you are pushing them when the phone is not in the case.)

I would be interested to know what exactly is causing this strange phenomenon in the new iPhones? Hoping my post helps others and helps Apple to know that is occurred to another person. Thank you.

My phone worked fine at night and I put it on to recharge overnight at usual. When I woke in the morning the screen was black. I tried the forced restart several times but it wouldn't work. In the end I plugged it into my Mac and the Mac noted a system error and performed a full system update for the phone. It said the update would take 2 hours but after 30mins the phone started working again. This was strange because I have automatic updates on so there wasn't any updates to that were missed. Very disappointed for a phone that is only a couple of months old.

I was confused if you needed to continually tap the up/down while holding the on button - NO

Further down in the responses I saw this - and it worked.

Step to restart iPhone 14 :-

1. Press volume “button up” once n release

2. Press volume “button down” once n release

3. Press start button n hold until the phone is on (it takes less then 1 min)

Same issue happened here on my 14 pro max.

Left the phone overnight to charge, woke up in the morning to a dead phone, not being able to switch it on.

After a few tries and research on the web I found out the way to force restart it, by pressing down the volume up, then pressing down the volume down, then long press the power button and it worked !

  • iOS -16.4
  • phone is 1 month old
  • same issue happened on my previously 11 pro max

Thank you to the person who shared this, I purchased my iPhone 14 pro before Christmas and did NOT buy an Apple care plan and came across this forum and was just SO STOKED when it worked…the quick release of volume up/volume down and then press the side button for over 20 seconds and BAM!! 🍎 Apple logo has appeared!!! Awesomeness!! Thank you baby Jesus!!!

Well, it happened again the other night (this time to my wife’s 14 Pro Max). I got home from work, the phone was lying on her charging matt, she was asleep and I just happened to take a look as her Lock Screen wasn’t displaying the clock (she has the wallpaper muted/clock on feature enabled), I saw that the matt had a solid blue light indicating it was in charge mode, so I went and tapped the screen, nothing. No response, no waking up from sleep nada. I went and did the up vol/down vol/hooks power, and waited. It took about 1 to 2 minutes before I saw the apple logo appear. After the restart, everything’s back to normal. Again the only thing I can think of is it’s an “uncooked” update or the like that causes the phone to crash upon its last restart after applying it and we’re forced to do the restart for it. Someone from Apple should state as much or report back to us what it is exactly as this is most frustrating. If I hadn’t checked, we’d have overslept and she’d have been late for work.

Same happened to me this morning after a night on charge. I have had this once before but on that occasion the forced reboot worked relatively easily.

Today I repeated the steps several times and it wouldn’t come back on. In the end I did the steps again but just kept holding the side button for what seemed like a very long time, I would say at least a minute maybe more. Finally an apple appeared to much relief!
