Does messages send read receipts when open on the desktop, but when I am working in a different window?

I am assuming it doesn't as I haven't actually read it whilst on a different window. However I am not sure whether the messages application is "aware" if I am on the desktop or not? I don't want to disable read receipts unless I have to, but I also don't want people thinking I am ignoring their messages when I am actually getting work done on a different (Full screen) application

IF you do have Read Receipts turned on, then that is delivered for every message that successfully shows up in your Messages client WHILE the Messages client is running - whether in the foreground or background. In your scenario, it would seem that Messages is running in the background and hence that receipt would get delivered. Cheers!
