how can I use the mac book pro camera when the computer is linked to a separate monitor

I have my mac book pro linked to a Mac monitor. I want to use the laptop camera instead of the monitor's camera. The only way I can use the laptop camera is by unlinking with the monitor, but I want the monitor screen on to view other windows besides the camera. Is there any sort of control as to which camera I want to use?

Also, is there any control on the video quality? The lighting is rather dark, can I lighten the picture any that is being sent from the camera (in other words, not by brightening my screen).

Hey there janburg,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you have some questions about using the built-in camera on your Mac. I’ll be happy to help.

Depending on which app you’re using you may be able to change the camera being used. This article talks about choosing a camera when using FaceTime:

Choose a camera or microphone for FaceTime calls on Mac

Let me know what apps you’re using your camera with. If it’s a third party app, you may need to refer to the app manual for what options they have.

Other than changing the ambient lighting in the area where you’re using the camera, there isn’t any adjustments for the video quality.

Regards.
