FileVault caused error
I turned on Filevault, imac rebooted and gave me a whilte screen and flashin file icon with a ? mark in center of icon. No progress bar. I have rebooted. I am unable to start in safe mode.

1. Start up from macOS Recovery
To start up from macOS Recovery, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold one of the following combinations on your keyboard. Command-R is generally recommended, especially if you never installed macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later… https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904#notupdated
Command (⌘)-R
Install the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac.
Option-⌘-R
Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

Sorry to say I think the drive has failed.
Can you het OSX on an external drive & try alt key to start from the external drive?
See if you can get someone to install your needed version of OSX on an external drive & hold alt key on startup.
Hi and thank you. I have a bad feeling about this. Unfortunately, Command R was unsuccessful. Command caused a brief pause of the flashing icon. Appreciate the input.
