Apple ID

I switched cellphone carriers a year or so ago, new number and new iphone. Anyways I lost the information on the old Apple ID, so I went ahead and created a new one. I recently found my old information but I cannot change the phone number associated with it because it sends the verification code to my old number. How can I bypass that so I can merge my old information with the new so nothing is lost?
