Question, Do I need to reinstall IntelliJ or is it something to do with my Mac OS or Mac hardware?

Contact the software's developers for help with their product. It isn't an Apple product. Check its compatibility: See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

FYI: These are user-only forums. This is not Apple Support. if you need to contact Apple Support, then contact product and tech support:  Contacting Apple for support and service including international calling numbers.

I too have this problem and this is definitely an Apple bug as it causes the entire machine to crash, not just the app. Even if there is a bug in the app no application running with normal user privileges should be able to hard crash the machine.

There is a massive thread about it here: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-2310

Also here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23155482

There may be a bug in the JRE or Jetbrains' native libraries, sure, but once again the fact that it crashes the whole machine (and I mean hard hang requiring power button to be held down) proves it's also an Apple problem.

It is not a hardware problem as it's being reported by many 2020 Air owners and nothing else triggers it.

I should also add that it does not happen on the 2019 Air or 2019 or earlier Pro models. Don't know about the 2020 13" Pro, which has similar hardware to the 2020 Air, as nobody on our team has one. All machines are running the very latest Catalina, so same OS.

So yeah, this is weird: one specific application hard crashes only the 2020 MacBook Air. If I were a betting man my money would be on the graphics driver or something similar.

I do have the exact same problem with IntelliJ and my Macbook Air. The computer crashes when using IntelliJ. I was initially suspecting a hardware bug and return my Macbook air until I saw this post.

If only the application was crashing, that would be an application problem. The OS needs to be resilient to machine crashes and it shows there is something wrong in the kernel or its drivers/module.

Please fix this.

There are reports of the same issue:

I ordered a Macbook Pro and return the Macbook Air. Guess what: the Macbook pro is crashing for other reasons.

When Apple will have machine that does not crash randomly again?
