With my previous Windows computer and iTunes installed, as soon as I connect my phone, a phone icon shows up. On this iMac, there's no iPhone icon showing up. I'm logged in, and computer is authorized. Please help.

If you're running Catalina, 10.14.5, as your system you will backup the iPhone via the Finder. Plug in the iPhone and open any Finder window. Look for iPhone in the sidebar.
With earlier systems you'll use iTunes.

I am sure you will easily navigate the learning curve. Once you do, if you are like most users you will wonder why you did not switch sooner. Most simple method to navigate is to turn on iClould on the phone and iMac. Here is a link to the instructions on how to do so:
Please remember Mac OS is totally different than Windows. What version of Mac OS is installed on the computer?
This is totally alien to me, had to search everything to navigate...
