Backlight cable short - flexgate

I got my 2016 MacBook Pro 15” back yesterday after it was diagnosed with a short in the backlight cable. The screen had stopped worked and was blank. While this design flaw cost is covered by Apple for the 13” version, it is not cover for the 15” MacBook Pro. The repair was $796. Sigh. The entire display screen part of the MacBook had to be replaced since the cable was not something that could be replaced independently. Apple Support was dismissive that there was an issue that needed to be covered by Apple. The MacBook had not been dropped or damaged. Anyone had this happen and have you had any luck getting Apple to step up?

Service Program—

All you can do is take it in and have it repaired.

At this time, there is no Service Program for this 15" issue of the projector cable, or the 2017 MBP.

Mac notebook, contact us and we'll send you a box you can use to ship it to an Apple Repair Center. We'll return your repaired product to you as quickly as possible. Depending on where you get service, you might be able to check the status of your repair online. Start a service request https://support.apple.com/mac/repair/service

Typically in the past if Apple does release a Service Program, they have offered a refund for out of pocket expense parts & labor for the exact issue covered.

Service Programs are triggered by the percentage of all MBP of this spec vs the number of failures documented.

We are not privy to this %, or have any more insight.

A repair ticket, your Apple Feedback—all are heading in the right direction to trigger this release.

Apple Feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback

A repair at your local AppleStore or AASP will generate a "service record" for the repair on your machine—and this is all you will need to qualify—if a Service Program is issued.

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Make an appointment for a "hardware issue"—

An alternative work-a-round for you is to connect to an external monitor if you can not afford the repair price.

Same issue here with my daughter computer with a 2017 13" MBP which cost me $2800 in November 2017 .

A hidden defect which takes a certain number of opening and closing the screen for it to reveal itself, and from what I have read in a number of discussion groups, it seems to average a couple of years for it to reveal itself under normal conditions.
