I have a lighting to HDMI video adapter that doesn't want to work. I get to the page that says phone link and has a QR code. When I scanned the code it took me to the app store where I loaded an app calle AmaLink. Even when the link is open, and the power is connected to the adapter I just get the phone link page and nothing else.

The Lightning to HDMI adapters don't require an App at all. Unless you are using a 3rd party adapter, that suggested an app for some reason.
Its a physical connection.
Just plug it in to the iPhone, and the other side to an HDMI port on a TV, and it should work. You should see the iPhone's screen directly on the TV. At which point you are done.
