Brought a USB-C to Headphone Jack. Does not work. Advice?

Before now, I was using a USB to headphone jack that was gifted to me by a friend. It has worked both for my iPad Pro(3rd generation), as well as my Android phone to adapt for my headphone use. Recently, it has broken and I have had to buy a replacement. Unfortunately, it has arrived today and does not work on either. Originally, I thought it might just not work for my Android phone (I have a Huawei), as whenever I was plugging it in, it would ask me what I wanted to use it for and no amount of selecting "music" or "use MIDI for music" would help, it was still playing music out loud. I've tried it on my iPad Pro and it still doesn't work and plays music out loud. I'm wondering if I've just missed something, some trick or it's broken and I need to seek out a refund and replacement.
