Transparency isn't preserved?

I am making an animation with eight frames that will be on top of a video loop. Each frame is transparent, and when I first drag it over the video in the timeline it is transparent and shows the video background behind it. However, when I turn off the Ken Burn's effect, it shows the frame against a black background and no longer preserves transparency. What can I do to fix this? I have attached images below to show my issue.

First image shows the frame when I drop it into the video, with the desired effect (I can see the background video)

Second image shows what happens when I turn off Ken Burns. I don't want this black background, I want the video behind it.

Thank you if you are able to help!

Turn off Ken Burns from the beginning. Then you should be able to line up your animation cat photos above your background and apply the Picture in Picture effect to each and the transparency will be preserved. You do the first photo with PiP and adjust it the way you want, and then Edit/Copy, Edit/Paste Adjustments, to the remainder of the photos.

With limited testing I was not able to replicate your issue on iMovie 10.1.12 on Mojave. It made no difference whether Ken Burns was on or off. The posters in the links that AirGraph provided found otherwise. I just couldn't replicate it.
