External Display / Monitor for MBP 13" - 2015

Hello !

I have MacBook Pro 13" - Early 2015 and I'm intending to have external display cause working for too long with such size 13" is tiring !

My main concerns 're the following:

  • I do Not play much gaming,
  • mainly I work with some designs, montage, vide editing as well as routine usage so I think I'll go for IPS Panel type
  • for size I think I may go for 27 or 32 ... but I think 27" is good enough
  • I don't want to get a display which after connecting to, may affect my device performance as some times I need to push it to it's limits ( I think If I got a 4k monitor this will affect performance )
  • what ports I'll need to use ? and I need to get good quality that's doesn't make me want to go back to small 13" retina display !

---

Also, I have tried to connect it to smart TV using HDMI port but what I have notices is that the resolution has become too bad ! and I think I can see pixels and font in words on the screen is too noisy !

despite the TV resolution is high and works normally.

----

My MacBook spec. are :

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)

  • processor : 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
  • Memory : 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
  • Graphics : Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

----

And I was thinking about this monitor :

PHILIPS Monitor 272M8 IPS, 27-inch

144HZ

1MS

Any Recommendations ?

Thanks in advance

Personally I would go with Dell due to the fact that I used other monitors from them and they are know for have great monitors. If you are looking for slightly better specs then you would want something along the lines of a gaming monitor. Typically response time is better on monitors branded for gaming. My updated recommendation is below. I know it is a jump in price but I personally believe it is worth it.

Alienware 27 Gaming Monitor - AW2720HF: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/new-alienware-27-gaming-monitor-aw2720hf/apd/210-atwf/monitors-monitor-accessories

As for connecting to a TV I don't always recommend that because TVs aren't exactly designed to work flawless as computer monitors. You can check out the video below for information about the difference between using a TV or monitor for your setup.

In terms of affecting your device performance that will be based on your graphics card. Honestly, if you are not doing any 4K video editing I would not recommend going for that resolution as I can make your GPU work harder even if you are not pushing 4K content to it.

Lastly, as Bob said in his last post that final choice is going to be up to you. I personally have used Dell monitors at work and home and have had few issues which I recommend them.

Let me know if this helps!

Hello!

My recommendation is the Dell P2719H which is a 27inch monitor that has 1920x1080 resolution and wide selection of connection options. I have used many different brands for monitors of the years and Dell always seems to stand out. The monitor has a ISP panel. You can check out the link below for more information about the monitor:

When using an external display use extended desktop mode rather than mirror the display mode. Mirroring mirrors your computer's display resolution which may not be the best resolution for your TV/external monitor.

Use external monitors with your Mac - Apple Support

With respect to which external monitor to get, that is a decision you'll have to make based on your needs. There may be a hundred or moref compatible external monitors. You'll need to decide which best meets your needs.

Hello !

Thanks for your reply,

I have checked the monitor you have mentioned and it seems great with a close price to PHILIPS 272M8 that I have mentioned.

It is great for too many ports it have. but it is only 60 Hz and Philips is 144Hz, and for response time dell is 8ms with 5ms if pushed to limit while Philips is 1ms.

so, what do you think ? shall I go for Philips as for the specs. ? or the Dell one will be better ?

and is dell working well with Mac ?

Thanks in advance

I have tried extended desktop mode but gives very low resolution too.

And yes for my needs I tried to summarize it

  • IPS Panel as I'll care about color, viewing angles, resolution more than gaming
  • I do montage, video editing and designs
  • I need something doesn't affect my device performance while working on it
  • I need good resolution enough not to push me to go back to the small retina display
  • some times I watch movies on the device, but it is not a big concern for me

And what about: weight, size, refresh rate, resolution, color, ports, extend ability, power connection, voltage, ...

What you listed is very subjective.

"I do montage, video editing and designs " tells us nothing.

"I need something doesn't affect my device performance while working on it" I would expect that every user would expect the same thing.

"I need good resolution enough not to push me to go back to the small retina display" What is good resolution to you may not be good for me. Again, very subjective.

"some times I watch movies on the device, but it is not a big concern for me" Again, tells us nothing.

You are going to have to decide from the 100 or more monitors that are compatible based on your needs.

--> I thought this was pretty much clear from my 1st recommendation :

I have talked about size, Refresh rate, Response time !!

PHILIPS Monitor 272M8 IPS, 27-inch

IPS

144HZ

1MS

for other things : that's why am asking here for recommendation at the 1st place ! :D

I appreciate the recommendation

Viewing Alienware 27 Gaming Monitor - AW2720HF, seems pretty good despite difference in price but I think it is worthy due to the specs it has.

Thanks for recommendation

And for 4k, yes I totally agree with you specially with my current graphic card, that's why I didn't recommend going for such resolution.

my last question, do you think with normal work flow -not gaming- does the refresh rate and response time affect the user experience a lot.

I tried ti search exactly what is refresh rate and response time and got the idea, but from your usage and experience, do you think it has a noticeable effect on normal work flow.

Again, Thanks a lot for your help !
