phone stuck on apple logo

Hi my phone was stuck with the apple logo and wouldn't do anything else. I've managed to get it to stop but iTunes tried to an update but it didn't work and now says I need to restore it, but my phone had stopped backing up several months before and I don't want to lose all my photos. is there any way around this?
