Catalina synchronizing photos from mac to iPhone using finder

Every time I plug my phone in to the mac the finder copies all 12,473 photos from the mac to the iPhone (or at least it says it is doing so) . Shouldn't it only sync the 5 or 10 new ones?

How to sync pictures from iphone x to macos catalina? Before I used to connect my iPhone x to my laptop, open Photos with the delete from phone option. This would move camera roll (new photos) off the phone and into my computer. I think pictures would be stored into the Photos Library in this step. Then step 2, I would open iTunes, backup my phone to my laptop and that would sync them, which means the photos would move from the computer to my phone albums. I think pictures would now be taken from the Photos Library and onto my phone, specifically into the albums now. This means in these 2 steps I would move pictures on my phone from Camera Roll to Albums and at the same time get a copy on my laptop as backup. How do I do this on Catalina without iTunes? I plugged in my phone, selected Delete imported items from device, the pictures got moved out of Camera Roll into mac Photos app. But how do I sync them back to my phone Albums?

Under Catalina, my photos are not syncing from my Mac to my iPhone :( I manage my photos on my Mac, using Photos, and sync a selection to my iOS devices (connected via USB cable). Today, I installed Catalina and the syncing no longer works. I selected the iPhone in the sidebar, set up the syncing criteria, clicked on Apply and then on Sync. My thousands of previously synced photos got wiped from the iPhone and then the syncing ended. This is very bad. I retried a few times, but nothing changed. Any suggestions? Thanks

Make changes to the preferences you see in the General window

and/or

from the Photos tab

Sync manually if necessary and you can choose which to import or no.
