Really frustrating that I have to go through iTunes to get audio files generated from other apps (specifically Reaper) into Garageband. Isn't there some way to just "import mp3 from disk"??? Sigh.

If you open the folder with the mp3 file and drag it into the Garageband project window, that should do it.

Well, dang. I swear I tried that and it didn't work, but admittedly that was a few GB versions ago. Works now anyway. Thanks!
