There are some online libraries with free digital versions of books.
Used to be a decade or two ago, Google was digitizing books;
for a time, were free to read online. Until copyright issues arose.
Internet Archive: Digital Library, free & borrowable books, movies, and Wayback Machine:

You'll have to use some time and a search engine. I'm partial
to those that don't track my usage: https://duckduckgo.com/
Another private search engine, is: https://startpage.com
Those 'who track' may offer a few more results; and ads?
Of these (given status of global pandemic) more were for kids.

You could look into Apple's "iBooks" application for what may be useful.
Some are free; I've a few user manuals, etc that are adequate. And some
sites have partial books, where chapters of the good stuff are missing.
There are publications from https://www.gutenberg.org/
Specialized portals; for 'maps from libraries' and misc archives:

AK Digital Archives:

This seems to be a mix; haven't looked in depth:
https://openlibrary.org/
Even smithsonian, nat'l geographic, etc has searchable web sites of free content.
Good luck & happy trails!🌻🌤
