unread messages showing when there are none

My Macbook Pro (15" 2019 running Catalina 10.15.4) shows five unread email messages in my Smart mailbox "Unread" which shows all unread messages. When new messages show up the count increases correctly, but never shows less than five. Here are things I've tried:

  1. Selected all emails and marked as 'unread' then marked them as 'Read'.
  2. Booted into Safe Mode and did same as above.
  3. Rebuilt all four email accounts in both normal and Safe mode.
  4. Created new mailbox and moved all email messages out of the Inbox.

At this point I don't know what else to try. Any help appreciated.

Hi TripleSea,

Thats unusual that the Smart Mailboxes would still show the five emails after it has been removed and re-created. Then I would suggest first testing in a new user account to see if it's an issue with the user data, follow this article.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If the issue still occurs in another user account, then first make sure your important information is backed up. Then you can look at this article to learn how to reinstall your macOS.

I hope this helps!

Hello TripleSea,

It sounds like you have an issue where you have unread emails, but cannot locate these unread emails. For this issue It may help the community if you provide a little bit more information.

Are these unread emails associated with one of the four emails? or Several?

When you sign into the email via web browser, do the 5 emails still show?

Have you tried Toggling the mail access?

System Preferences> internet accounts> choose the accounts>Mail

For other general mail issues you can always have a look here,

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.

Actually there are no unread emails. Even after I moved ALL emails out of the inbox my smart mailbox "Unread" still shows a number 5.

The Smart Mailbox only looks for unread messages in my 'Inbox'.

If I sign into my account online the "Inbox" does not show any unread emails.

Not entirely sure what you mean by 'Toggling'. I went to the account and took them offline, then back online. Is that what you meant?

Hello Joseph,

I think it is a only a problem on my Macbook Pro. My iMac, with the same email accounts, does not show any unread emails.

I had already tried to rebuild all four accounts.

And I did remove the Smart mailbox which shows the five emails. Then re-added it. And poof the number 5 reappeared. Has to be some problem with the OS.

Thanks for trying to help Joseph, I appreciate it.

Take care,

TripleSea
