13" MacBook Pro 2017 - Blinking horizontal lines at the top of the screen

There are horizontal lines blinking at the top of my screen after some heavy using time.

Model: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Processor 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

macOS Catalina: version 10.15.4

I have tried reseting SMC and PRAM, but the lines were still there.

Does anyone encounter this problem as well?

The repair program seems to be only for MacBook Pro 2016, isn't it?

GUYS I HAVE IMPORTANT NEWS: I GOT FREE REPAIR

be prepared for what i am going to say, it will be unpleasant for most of you but i hope to let you get my impression and what i feel like it worked in order to get a free repair.

I write from Italy, Milan and my problem regards a MacBook Pro 2017 13'' (2 thunderbolts, no touch bar) since september 2020, i tried a lot of calls to Apple support, at least two different practices with long trials via software updates, computer formatting and many other useless solutions: the problem was definitely hardware.

I think that someone in this discussion got the keypoint: it seems a detail but i seriously think that what makes really the difference in this terrible situation is the Keyboard Service Program (https://support.apple.com/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks), i don't know why but i had a feeling that there was a correlation between this program and the other one (yes you read it correctly: THERE IS ANOTHER PROGRAM).

Yesterday, unfortunately, or now i would say fortunately, one key fell off, i also noticed the barspace having some issues when writing (sometimes double space was written with one touch) and in my mind i remember also the bottom arrow being sticky.

Without any hope i went to Apple Support and also tried again to talk about the horizontal lines problem: they recognized in 5 minutes the keyboard problem, and BE PREPARED... they also recognized the horizontal lines, they even didn't want to see it, a picture was enough for them (and by the way is the same pic you can find above this answer and that other apple workers refused) mentioning that there is "another repair program", i literally asked for the name of it and where to find it, the worker smiled and told me that "some of these programs are silent", can you imagine guys? SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE SILENT. I had spent lot of time asking about this problem and the answer was always the same: there is no repair program for this.

I don't know if those of you that received this response went phisically to genius bar, i feel like this is an internal procedure that they apply in certain situations (and here i think that they apply it mostly if you have also keyboard problem), but if no information is provided on their website (like with the first repair program) maybe online they will tell you that it doesn't exist simply because they don't know it and they read the info from the website.

At the end of the day they recognized both problems and give a free repair for a total amount of almost 1000 euros, this can't be real.

I will add an extra point: to me the worker was a lot aware of the problem of horizontal lines, in 2 seconds he said that he knew well that problem and that was related to "some connectors" that had this issue and which is causing in these models sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical lines, to me it looks that he literally said that apple knows well this problem, this strategy seems a sneaky way to minimize free repairs. YOU MUST INSIST GUYS.

I don't know, i am seriously confused, happy for me but sad for you, i want you all to insist as i did, trying the approach i pointed in this answer. The following pics proof what i am saying.

I'm not sure if I have the same issue as all of you or if those lines are hiding below this mess but this is my MacBook Pro 13" 2017 no touch bar display:

Suddenly just went weird one day in terms of saturation and brightness and then the lines started to appear. Never been dropped etc. to my knowledge. Doesn't see a whole lot of use either as I use my iMac as my main device.

Took it into Apple and all they are saying is that it needs a completely new display costing me £469. Not giving any sort of indication as to whats causing it or what particular component has failed... really frustrating.

the same for me, I'm very angry ..I'm just started my studies and those problem appears . it's just upset that apple don't recognize this problem. many peoples suffer from this problem on 2017 models . we spent thousand of dollars for get the "best" device but receive a not trustworthy one.

the problem is overheating in the t-con , you can't repair it without replace the whole screen .. it's just crazy that such device got overheated just of using zoom for studies.

it's my first apple notebook and I'm saying in sure that it the last one!

Okay , so 14 pages of the same issue .. same Macbook Era Pro! How do we make our voice be louder and have Apple at least acknowledge that this is an issue!?

I have continued to read up about this very problem and it clearly is an issue caused from a design flaw in the 2016/17 Macbook Pros. The display assembly over heats and this is what is causing the ‘horizontal lines and ghosting screen’ issues. Problem is once you cook it , that’s it , it continues to wear its self down so while u close the Macbook Pro display and give it an hour and subsequently the screen is okay upon re opening, the issue returns ever so faster until either u smash the screen with ur fist ( as i did ) or the screen dies entirely !

The same here. MBP 2017, 13 inch, two thunderbolt, 3 ports. Opened laptop and have 1 vertical line in the middle of the screen and many horizontal small lines all over. Disappears when closing the screen to a 30° angle.

Went to Apple service and repair shop where they told me that because my Macbook is 2 years and 3 months old, costs would be all mine. The whole screen had to be replaced and would cost 700+ euros!!!

I can agree that I have to pay after warranty has expired but this is more than reasonable, especially when it's clearly a well known fault in production. They gave me the phone number of the Apple consumer desk and got to speak 2 different persons who both confirmed they could do nothing because the 2017/2018-models are not eligible models. Even a partial compensation wasn't possible. The only thing they wanted to do was note down the complaint.

I feel like buying an Apple product is becoming a financial risky business. Things get broken, but for paying a lot of money I expect a firm taking their responsibility when a production fault occurs. I loved working with Apple products but now I'm not going to take the risk anymore.

I have Macbook Pro 2017 and got the same issue! I started experiencing it last April 2020 when we were in quarantine/lockdown and using the laptop for longer periods. Contacted Apple support and said they don't have an existing service program for this so i have to pay for the fix. I got my macbook for 24months installment and im still paying for it! I haven't used it that much in fact, my battery cycle count is still less than 200! Its not fair that I have to pay for it! obviously this is a hardware defect! I've searched the internet and there are quite a lot of users experiencing this.

They told me that one way to get this notice is to raise a feedback on this link - https://www.apple.com/feedback/. Feedbacks raised on this link are reviewed directly by their engineers and product managers. If we can get more people, hopefully they will acknowledge that we have faulty machines and fix this for free!

PS: I have a very very old macbook air that is used and abused and i haven't had any issue.

I have a Macbook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) that is experiencing a similar issue as of last night. I can't count them, but there must be over a hundred thin black lines horizontally across my entire screen from the very top to the very bottom. I reset the NVRAM and PRAM to no avail. I also updated to the newest software update, macOS Big Sur Version 11.1 but that didn't change anything either. In fact, the lines can be seen from the moment the Apple logo shows up when I restart the computer, which makes me think it's not a software issue. I connected my laptop to my TV screen and found that there were no lines on the external monitor, so it is a problem local to the Macbook screen itself.

This morning, if I closed my screen and reopen it, the lines would sometimes go away for a few seconds. But in that case, if I had a page open (say a chrome tab) and attempted to close it, there was this strange effect where the page's imprint remained on my screen, but in a more transparent manner. Unfortunately, I can't seem to replicate that at the moment to take a picture as the lines across my screen won't go away so that is the main issue at hand at the moment.

Let me know if anyone has had any success with getting it fixed or if anyone has any insight into this problem's progression over time. Thanks.

after 4 month the half of display is fully blacked. And even visible part of screen has faint grey making it even worst. I got this issue after compiling some program. But hey what do pro in macbook pro means?

The issue is apple engineer placed heatsink near tcon board. So due to heat sometime it can affect heatsink. And I simply don't understand why Apple is not even recalling when its their own fault.

And its not 14 page but probably 20-30 page because half of the comments are deleted by moderator. Stop scamming user and stop censoring it.

Same issue here. I tried to repair it but I’m still having issues. I took it to Mac service and initially they thought it was a Logic Board issue (FYI that Logic Board issue have happened 2 times since 2017, the first was on the warranty but the second one I had to buy a new Logic Board). Nevertheless the issue persisted even on a new logic board, so the explanation was that the screen connection was defective.
