Mid-2013 Macbook Air continues to log me out when in use.

Hello to all, my name is Kevin and my Macbook Air has been acting very weird lately.

I have never dropped or damaged my laptop, as I take care of all my tech.

Suddenly, my computer will suddenly log me out and forcing me to log me back in, I would say every 30 seconds.

I have changed all sleep setting to never, reset PRAM & SMC (more than 10 times), powered up in safe mode, hard reset, opened her up and cleaned the logic board from CPU to USB. Have tried everything.

Keeps logging me out.

Would really like some help, cant afford another computer.

Hello, WrxBaez.

Thanks for getting back to us here in Communities with an update. You're on the right track when trying to determine if the issue is related to software. You mentioned a full factory reset? Does that mean you wiped the entire drive and started with a fresh copy of macOS?

Before moving forward, be sure to backup any important data: Back up your Mac

Since the issue still occurs in both safe mode and test user account, the next step is to reinstall macOS as quoted from the safe mode article: How to use safe mode on your Mac

"If the issue continues in safe mode

If the issue continues while in safe mode, or your Mac restarts several times and then shuts down while starting up in safe mode, you should reinstall macOS and make sure that your Apple software and third-party apps are up to date".

Do you have any apps installed? Any recent apps installed when this starting occurring? If possible, try connecting a third party keyboard and mouse. See if that helps.

Best regards.

Hello, WrxBaez.

Typically, reinstalling macOS resolves any software issues within the system software. Since the MacBook is actually going to sleep this could be an issue with power and hardware. At this point it would be best to contact Apple Support to look further into this. I would also suggest resetting the SMC one more time using the steps found in this article: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

Cheers!

Good morning Ryane77!

I ran the hardware test that apple allows us to do while holding D during boot up, "No Hardware Issues Found" was prompted on the screen.

I've brought this laptop twice to two different apple stores already. They continued to tell me that I need a new logic board.. that has no issues?

I repeated the SMC reset procedure two times after the reinstall of the MacOS, same problem.

I can definitely purchase a new battery, but I would have seen a message telling me that wouldn't I? Battery holds and charges fine. I have disconnected the battery and booted up using the correct wall charger and all. Same problem.

Not the battery.

What a headache man. I appreciate you folks trying, running out of troubleshooting steps lol

Good evening Sarah!

That is correct, full wipe and clean. No third party apps with the all the latest updates.

Just recently repaired/reinstalled MacOS for the third time now. The backlight on the keyboard now seems to be operating correctly after the reinstall, but obviously continues to turn on and off when the laptop sleeps while in use.

I booted up in safe mode fine before will try that out once more since I reinstalled the OS

UPDATE:

Successfully booted up in safe mode, go to the usual YouTube test. I now have no keyboard backlight, no audio, and continues to go to sleep when in use.

After restarting the computer so it boots up normally, I know sometimes have a backlight when I log back into my user, and now after logging in about four times, it takes a couple clicks or space key strokes to respond to the log in screen.

Also, the apple logo flickers when the laptop is closed, trying to wake the screen thinking it is open.

Just wanted to thank you both for being active in the community trying to help folks out

Update:

Plugged in my additional keyboard and mouse and the problem continues, both devices work but will go to sleep whenever it feels like it. I should probably pour some coffee on it now to wake up as a last resort if I'm being honest haha

Hello, Kevin.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand you're being logged out of your MacBook Air constantly. You've done some excellent troubleshooting steps and I'd like to help. First, let's check a specific setting that may be related to this. Go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy. You may need to unlock to make changes. Once unlocked, there is an Advanced tab in the bottom right corner. Click on that and check for the setting "Log out after a X amount of minutes of inactivity". Either turn this off or adjust the time.

If this isn't the case, see if the same thing occurs in a test user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

You may want to also check your log in items: Open items automatically when you log in on Mac

Do you have any security software installed?

Keep me updated.

Cheers!

Good Afternoon PsyDye,

My apologies for not stating that I have turned off AND put 60 minutes into this feature throughout my day yesterday. Still has the same result. Also, no, I do not have any security software installed.

Thank you for the tip! I have created another user and verified that there are zero log in items in both to start off with. Even when creating and "Setting up your Mac" was on my screen, it continues to log out. What I found differently though is that when on the other User, lets name it "Testing", it would just make the screen go black and would make me hit space or click to continue what I was doing (browsing YouTube and playing a video). It doesn't log me out like the admin account does, I would assume its for safety reasons because it has administration permissions and etc.

I know the SMC controls features as the status light indicator and the back light on the keyboard. Sometimes, the keyboard wouldn't even light up on the times I log in. The battery holds its charge, but I'm not too sure if a bad battery would log me out? I would expect it to shutdown instead.

Also, there has been zero magnets near my laptops before & after all these attempts, so the computer inst getting any false positives that I closed my screen.

UPDATE (about 40 minutes after writing the initial message above):

I did find a way to test my hardware by holding D when booting up. The screen shows me I have no hardware issues which is a relief.. AND THE SCREEN HAS NEVER TURNED OFF YET. hmmm has to be software then. This may be a step in the right direction.

After 5 whole minutes, the screen stays alive and well on the same message.

After restarting, I have went on another YouTube video and BOOM, logs me out. I'm on the most recent software update on a full factory reset..

Any Idea for the next step?
