When I open my hard disk, all the folders and files are in the .exe format and i am not able to view their contents. When i connect the same hard disk to my windows laptop, I can view all the files and folders. Is this a virus? How can I recover them?

A file with no extension, or one with no applicaiton installed to open the file type, will be presented with the executable binary icon. This is the Finder's way of visually saying you are up the creek until you determine what application created the file.
.exe files are Windows executable files. Where did you get the files? What type of file are they?
The .exe file means executable file. These files are made to be run on Windows.
If you did not put those files on the hard disk then it means that those files are viruses.
Get those files deleted.
