How do I make iTunes automatically backup to local computer by default?

I am using iTunes 12.10.6.2 with a new iPhone 11 pro max. With my old phone (6+) "this computer" was always selected as the default backup location and my phone would synch and backup when I connected to my windows 10 pc via USB. When I connect my new phone via USB, it synchs as usual, but the radio button keeps reverting to iCloud and no backup takes place automatically. I have to select "this computer" and manually backup every time. How do I change this behavior and automatically synch AND backup when I connect my phone (as it always did with iPhone 6+)?

Thanks

Hello bms44974,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand you want to automatically sync and back up your iPhone and will gladly show you how.

In iTunes, while the iPhone is plugged in, there should be an option on the Summary page called, "Automatically sync with this iPhone is connected."Ensure this is checked then try checking the radial button again to automatically back up to 'This Computer': Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer

On the iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Backup then turn off iCloud Backup option. You can still back up manually, but automatic backups can only be done to either iCloud or your computer.

Thanks.

I have done all this and the default for automatic backup is still "iCloud" every time I connect my iPhone to the computer. Since I have disabled iCloud backup on my phone, no backup occurs (only synch). I have to backup manually (after selecting "this computer") every I connect. I am looking for a way to backup my iPhone automatically to "this computer" when I connect via USB.

bms44974,

If you have set it up as described, then restart the computer you're using and try setting it up again exactly as described from the previous message.

If there are still issues, try reinstalling iTunes: Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later

After all that has been completed and if the default still can't be set, reach out to Apple Support directly: Contact Apple Support

Take care.
