Play/playhead issue with Logic Pro X 10.5

This morning I was working on a project on Logic before the new update. I had no idea about the new update today. For absolutely no reason Logic decided to quit my current session and update on its own to 10.5. When I opened Logic back up, I had to give it permission and it told me "welcome to Logic Pro X" even though I've already used it? Anyways, everything seemed fine with my projects however about 3 minutes in I noticed I wasn't able to play anything. The playhead was stuck. The weird thing is that I'm able to press the record button and it plays fine. I opened a new project and tried to investigate this further. I found out that the playhead actually works fine when there's no notes, but as soon as there are MIDI notes it immediately stops playing. I don't know how to fix this.

Hi,

talked to apple support (Germany). They say its a software problem with 10.5 and the only thing we can do now is a bug report on this site.... -.-

The Logic Team need to receive a lot bug reports now! ;) So that they realize how important that bugfix is.

I called Apple this morning and they said the only way to reinstall LogicX 10.4.8 was to wipe my entire hard drive and reinstall the whole thing, and that even then there's no guarantee the app would properly install a previous version. Could you please give me instructions as to how exactly you restored !0.4.8 from Time Machine/Time capsule ?

Thank you for replying. Yes that sounds very simple, but this is all new to me. I just went into Time Machine, I only get shots of the Finder window, and all of the applications are covered with a slash mark. The restore button is never highlighted and active. Also, according to Apple Support on the phone this morning, Time machine doesn't restore apps without wiping the entire HD. I was hoping there was something in the process I was missing. Are you suggesting that moving Logic 10.5 out of the applications folder will allow time machine to replace that app?

I don't know why your TM is not backup up your applications, maybe scroll back a few days/months and see if they are there? I was not only able to restore it, but when I said "keep original", I had two Logic Pro X versions in my applications folder. Maybe I'm running a newer OS than you? I'm running 10.15.4 (Catalina). You certainly don't have to reformat your HD to restore applications, at least not lately.

Logic X 10.5 can exist happily with an older version (10.4). You just need to ensure you are opening problematic files in older app. You can do this by opening the older app and then using the file menu or dragging a file you want to open to the Logic 10.4 app's. Or using file info to open all Logic files in the previous version of Logic.

To make things clearer you can rename the latest version of Logic to Logic new.

OK, so we've ruled out Spectrasonics. I have Apple gathering data from my computer today.

From the Apple LPX support person I've been talking to, "if you do file a bug report I have to let you know this, they will look at it. I don’t know how quickly they look over it. I do not know how quickly that it will be addressed."

This might be another one of those classic situations where Apple doesn't take it seriously because only 5% of users are dealing with it, even though this is clearly a critical error.

Man, this sucks, we were 5 weeks into a 13-week album production schedule, and this whole week's just been burnt because of this bug.

Yes, everybody, ^^ please do file a bug report. I have uploaded a video of the issue to Apple, filed a bug report, spoken with Logic Support via phone and email, and they don't seem optimistic that anything will be fixed expediently. Let's make sure they know how big of an issue this is for us full-time professionals who rely on a stable LPX architecture.

Also, does anyone having this issue have Roland Cloud installed? I'm 95% sure at this point that the bug is within the LPX architecture, and not due to a 3rd party plugin (I have tested with only one instance of Apple's own Alchemy and the problem still happens). But I want to eliminate any additional variables. The engineers are apparently working on it, but per Apple Support, in total transparency, they might not have an update until after WWDC.

This has nothing to do with any other hardware or software. I have virtually no plugins, and nothing but a Komplete keyboard. I couldn't possibly run a more barebones Logic setup. I have a piece that is entirely midi instruments, all stock Logic instruments, and it happens reliably to me.

I tend to believe the note above about deselecting "marquee playback", but to be honest I'm not going to try it. I, once again, have been burned by the "upgrade to a massive new version right away" issue. I'll wait for 10.5.1.

May 22, 2020 12:04 PM in response to clwill00

Well, I decided to go back and try it again. I closed all apps, and then with applications folder open in finder window, I highlighted Logic and then entered time machine. I did some research to make sure I chose a backup before the 10.5 release, and that time after a minute or two of waiting, the applications looked active. So I clicked Logic and the "restore" button also after a brief pause also became active. Once clicked it also asked me if I wanted to keep both or replace, and I chose replace. Voila! Back to 10.4.8! I also turned off automatic updates in preferences. Everything is working fine, but I did lose some key shortcuts and right click option. But I went back into Logic prefs, to get them back. All is well. Thanks for you attention and help.
