Play/playhead issue with Logic Pro X 10.5

This morning I was working on a project on Logic before the new update. I had no idea about the new update today. For absolutely no reason Logic decided to quit my current session and update on its own to 10.5. When I opened Logic back up, I had to give it permission and it told me "welcome to Logic Pro X" even though I've already used it? Anyways, everything seemed fine with my projects however about 3 minutes in I noticed I wasn't able to play anything. The playhead was stuck. The weird thing is that I'm able to press the record button and it plays fine. I opened a new project and tried to investigate this further. I found out that the playhead actually works fine when there's no notes, but as soon as there are MIDI notes it immediately stops playing. I don't know how to fix this.

Hi,

talked to apple support (Germany). They say its a software problem with 10.5 and the only thing we can do now is a bug report on this site.... -.-

The Logic Team need to receive a lot bug reports now! ;) So that they realize how important that bugfix is.

I’m really surprised that it was kind of just like an update that many of us weren’t aware of, because we were working hard in Logic. Many of us just opened it one day and it was there. I just find that kind of strange and also that a lot of the third-party developers weren’t ready for it.

I’m having difficulty understanding the logic in that😒

No big surprise in my opinion.

Users activated Automatic Updates in the App Store application.

Apple rarely announces updates.

Impacts on third party developers is usually known years in advance. I'm not saying they know it is coming with a specific update. They only know that something may no longer work in the future. They just wait to the last minute.

First of all, many thanks to everyone for the tips! I think it is not because of the third party developers... I had this problem in an almost empty project. Sometimes a restart helps and logic runs for hours without problems and on the next day the issue comes back and I just don't know why that happens. It's frustrating.

In my opinion, it's not the operating system or hardware. This is simply due to logic's program code and happens randomly. As far as I know apple knows about it and they working on an update. Almost a month has passed since 10.5.0... let's see how long they'll need.

I agree it’s just interesting to me, because Apple sends developers dev kitsso they can have this worked out in advance so it’s interesting to me in the music industry it’s lagging.

Could you imagine if that was the case with phone applications, Our poor world would be a mess.

You’re correct they don’t normally announce updates but one that is the biggest one in years I would think they would’ve sent everyone something about it.

For me, it had nothing to do with any of my third-party plug-ins. But it just so happens that one of mine came up as no longer compatible but still appeared like it was working at the same time. So that was just something I threw out there as a possibility. I have not had the problem occurred again since I went through my little routine- knocking on wood at this very moment.

I was not able to replicate this in a new project whatsoever.

You cannot compare huge telecom infrastructure providers with tiny plugin developers.

Aside the marketing fuzz, the 10.5 update is not that big from a software framework perspective. Mostly deprecated stuff going in the drain from my understanding. They had plenty of time to prepare. Think about it, some are still struggling to move to a 64 bits architecture!

BTW I'm not saying that problems users experience with 10.5 come from third party developers. I was just answering the question from Z-MoneyDenver above.

I’m not trying to argue and you’re totally right about everything however I am not comparing large telecom companies , there 1000s of apps for android and iPhones that are indeed small , tiny app companies, many are 1-4 developers for one app, that’s what I’m referring to and therefore no different then third-party plug-in devs.

Sorry everyone, I’m referring to Wilddrums question, I should probably move this to a different discussion. I am

Sorry about your business dude. This I know has been horrible for working musicians. I just do it as a hobby but when I called Apple that's exactly what I told them. I said some people (not me) make money to feed their families this way and you're not communicating with them about fixing the issue. They are definitely communicating with me and I appreciate that, but it would really be nice if they would reply to this thread (I sent them the link, and they confirmed they are aware of this post).

Yes exactly. I’ve been working around it by recording a blank MIDI instrument (thanks to whoever figured that out!) but after 20 hours of working that way, I had had enough.

Really crazy that the App Store won’t let paying customers select and download the previous version (honestly, we should be permitted to download ANY released version). Even crazier that Apple Support is so un-professional focused that they refuse to provide direct download links.

Long ago Logic’s download manager kept failing to download all 70+ GB of sounds. After 10 hours on the phone with support and numerous escalations, they said there was nothing else to try but to wipe the system and reinstall. What BS. I found the direct links to the downloadable PKG files and have never had that issue since — the links also still work to this day.

As a professional, I consider Apple an obstacle to my work.
