Can't access iCloud backup

Since I upgraded to Catalina, the iCloud icon in System Preferences has vanished. I was backing up with Time Machine via an external HD, but the disk has failed and can't be repaired (I've gone through all the steps). I can get into iCloud via Google, but even signing in that way doesn't get me any options to back up. Can I still back up to the Cloud? If so, how can I do it? Otherwise I guess I have to get a new external HD quickly...?? Thank you for any help!

Apple has iCloud Backup for iPhones and iPads but not for Mac computers.

It is possible to sync many things to iCloud and that has some, but not all benefits that a backup has. For example, if you delete something, intentionally or accidentally and don't notice it, you have a limited number of days to recover it. Also, only selected things can be synced.
