Macbook Air mid 2013 upgrade from Mojave to Catalina

i tried to update from Mojave to Catalina and it said that I needed a APFS volume instead of Mac OS Entended Journaled. So I formatted part of my HD to have APFS Partition. In the now APFS partition side it says (please look at photos below) that I need a firmware update... I tried and D/L but it says I have that one... What am I missing?... What am I doing wrong? This Macbook Air should allow upgrade to Catalina as it fits the minimum requirements.

Do you have an original Apple SSD installed or a third party SSD?


If the Mojave drive isn't formatted as APFS already, then my guess is you either restored from a backup or cloned the drive at some point. Was Mojave ever actually installed on this system? I'm just curious if it has the latest system firmware from the Mojave installer. Open the System Profiler by Option-clicking on the Apple menu and selecting the first option. Post the version of your BootROM here.


I would recommend making sure you have a good verified working backup of system before you proceed any further.


I'm not sure quite how to advise you to proceed here since Catalina is making this really difficult with two conflicting error messages. Once I see your BootROM version it may help me in how to guide you. Also knowing whether Mojave was actually installed at some point or whether it was just cloned or restored from a backup.

I’m sorry for the delay. I actually followed advice from another source and it didn’t work out too well... But I had backed up everything and made a USB Catalina upgrade and after formatting and pressing option on restart, I got the desired break I was looking for and I was able to finally upgrade to Catalina. I’m still uncertain as to why that all happened.... I was already going through all this when I had received your reply and was unable to see the boot Rom version. Anyway, everything worked out fine and I thank you regardless for your input.
