I was logging on to take my AP test earlier when I suddenly realized that my desktop background turned a solid blue. I was able to change it back to the default background but it was kind of weird. Was there something about the test that caused this or is it a problem that came from my Macbook Air?

Even so, the symptom is that of creating a new space within mission control. Maybe you hit the shortcut key for a new space by accident. The background changes either when a space is created, or when you setup your Desktop & Screen Saver desktop background on a slide show to change the desktop background, or if you have two displays, it may default to a plain background on one display while use the background that fits the resolution of the other display.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

The test probably is designed to run in its own space. This is to prevent you from opening another screen to cheat with information from elsewhere.
Just for clarification, I typically use Chrome but on this one occasion, I opened up Safari because Chrome wasn't working well. Would opening a third party application such as Safari be an example of creating a new space which possibly led to my screen turning blue (like the image below)? These are my mission control settings.
I unchecked them and opened up Safari but the desktop background didn't change.
It didn't require a separate browser and the test was completely open notes/internet.
It could be, especially since change picture every 30 minutes is unchecked.
Go under System Preferences to check your Mission Control settings.
Uncheck the top 3 for a test.
