New macbook pro heating up and lagging a little.

I just bought the 2020 map 10th gen base model last 2 days and I'm seeing the temperature hitting 60-70C just from 1-2 tabs on safari/chrome. Also, scrolling through webpages like reddit and google search sometimes stutters a little. Is this a defect or it is normal? It's my first time using a MacBook switching over from windows. Please get back asap thank you!

Have you performed the basic troubleshooting steps yet? See below.

  1. Reset SMC by following the directions applicable to your MacBook Air here ➔ How to Reset SMC. If that does not solve things then-
  2. Reset NVRAM/PRAM by following the directions applicable to your MacBook Air here ➔ How to Reset NVRAM/PRAM. If that does not solve things then-
  3. Enter ➔ Safe Mode and see if the heating/stuttering issue still exists. What safe mode does is that it does not preload background apps except the essential apps and that helps you determine whether it is a background app using up the CPU capacity. Safe Mode also clears some cache files that are not needed for normal operation. Sign out of Safe Mode and then turn off your computer. Turn your computer back on and sign in normally. If after logging in normally does not solve the issue then-
  4. Open System Preferences ➔ Users & Groups ➔ Login Items - These are the items are loaded during startup in the background. Take a picture of the screen and post it here so that we can see what they are and then we can recommend which items to uncheck during next startup to see if one or more of those items is affecting the performance of your MacBook Air.

Hi Axel F.

sorry for the late reply as I was busy. anyway I tested everything you said and my startup has only 2 small application. the problem still persist with stuttering and laggy scroll experience in sites like reddit and gmail. Also, I have experienced small lags throughout the system which shouldn't be happening on such an expensive laptop.

Thanks!

I also have this issue. Have used the computer for less than 2 hours. Have installed a few apps but my old MacBook Air has the same apps and more and is running as well - no issues on that side.

I do not have an apple store in my town so that is not an option. Presumably I will have to go through all the things you suggested but it doesn't give me confidence in a brand new machine - in my experience when you have issues like this at the outset then you will suffer other issues over the long term. Is there a way to log that the computer is a problem from the outset and return it for a new one in the next couple of months if I continue to see issues?

I know that is the 2020 MacBook Pro and is new. If you DID NOT install any apps and did not change any settings and the MacBook is behaving in the manner that you state right out of the box then you need not perform any of those tasks and immediately take it to the Apple Store to have it examined for performance.

If you have added apps, adjusted or changed some settings then the best thing to do is troubleshoot using the most basic techniques that I had listed.
