Delay before voice is heard when answering calls

Hello,

I have a brand new Xs Max and have noticed that when answering incoming calls, the caller does not hear my voice for the first 0 to 1 seconds of the call.

I have confirmed that the phone does actually accept the call on the display and the call timer starts, but my voice is not heard.

This results in me answering and saying "Hello", them not hearing anything, and an awkward exchange of "can you hear me" happens.

What I know:

  • The issue occurs with peripherals like airpods as well (This is the main problem, as with airpods in I tap to pick up the call and speak immediately)
  • I can reproduce this 100% of the time.
  • It happens in different areas and all signal strengths (low/high)
  • The issue does not happen on my old Samsung phone

What I have tried:

  • Restarting phone
  • Turning off VoLTE
  • Turning off WIFI calling
  • I have tried calling my phone on my friends Iphone 8 Plus and the same delay occurs when the phones are switched around (eg. when they accept the call and speak into their phone)

I tested this a few days ago and was confident that the issue was not happening on her phone, but after deciding to do more testing and putting my sim card in her phone, it seems to also be happening on the 8 plus, even with her sim card back in. I am not sure if the act of putting my sim card in her phone has caused a carrier side issue to start happening as well.

  • Contacting Apple support (they suggested the items above and to contact the carrier)
  • Contacting the carrier (Telstra, Australian), aside from being typically unhelpful, they suggested its a handset issue since the problem does not occur on my Samsung phone

This may occur on outgoing calls as well, but since the person receiving the call answers and speaks first, I haven't managed to test it very well.

Trying to look up the issue the only thing I can find is a delay issue that was present on the Xs Max but this delay was with the screen, this isn't the same issue but I am not sure if it is related.

Has anyone experienced this issue, or could confirm if this is a problem with the phone or something else? It would be comforting to know that it is not intended or that the solution isn't to answer calls slower.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Hi there MichaelN5,

It sounds as though there is a delay before you're able to be heard on a call. It's important to be heard on calls, I'd be happy to assist!

Here is a resource below that can help:

If you can't make or receive calls on your iPhone

While the issue you describe isn't specifically that you're unable to make a call, the steps in the resource above can be used to resolve issues with calls.

I hope this helps,

Cheers!
