Do not upgrade until you resolve the shutdown problem.

Emergency Shutdown and Startup

  1. Press and hold down the Power button until the computer shuts down (5-60 secs.)
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

How to fix an Apple Mac that won't shut down

(from another ASC user but slightly modified)

There's no simple answer to fix a Mac that has problems shutting down. It could be caused by a variety of different problems. Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try. Go through each, one at a time, and see if it solves the problem:

  1. Try to determine if one particular app is causing the problem. If one app always freezes when you shut down and cancels the shutdown process then update it (or re-install it).
  2. Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac.
  3. Perform a software update (open App Store and click Updates > Update All).
  4. Update the OS software, if needed, using Software Update preferences.
  5. Update any software that you installed outside of the App Store. Typically open the App and choose Help > Update or App > Update Software.
  6. Check that you have FileVault turned off (System Preferences > Security & Privacy > FileVault > Turn Off FileVault).
  7. Open Disk Utility. Choose the main hard drive, and click Repair Disk.
  8. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac.
  9. Backup and reinstall Mac OS X.

If it's new, then it's under warranty. You have 90 days of free telephone support that you should use. If possible, make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service after the stores re-open. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. Also, see How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Distributor (AAD). You may also get Apple authorized service at a local Best Buy.

"Your Apple-branded or Beats-branded hardware product (“Product”) is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase (“Warranty Period”) when used in accordance with Apple`s user manuals (refer to www.apple.com/support/country). Under this warranty, you will be able to direct your claims to Apple even in situations where you purchased the Apple Product from a third party.” [Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty – Accessory - For Apple and Beats Branded Products Only.]
