Game audio while iPhone is silent?

I typically have my phone on Silent all the time. In the past, I was still able to hear game audio by simply launching the game, and hitting the volume rocker. This would enable game audio while keeping all other audio from the phone silent (eg notifications). That no longer seems to be the case. Not sure which iOS version changed this behavior but I’m really missing it. Now, in order to hear game audio, I have to take my phone off of Silent, which allows all other audio through (which interrupts the game). Any idea when this behavior changed? Is there a trick to allowing game audio while the phone is silent?
