When using my Apple ear buds and adapter my podcast stops and jumps around

When using my Apple ear buds and adapter my podcast jumps around to other podcasts, goes to Siri and sometimes stops. Is this something with the adapter?

I have now been able to narrow down the problem (podcasts jumping around and stopping) to my apple adapter. I don’t need the adapter for my iPad and I don’t have a problem. When I used the adapter on my IPad, it starts jumping around again. The adapter is about 2 years old. Would it do any good to by another adapter or should I buy new EarPods?

The new EarPods wouldn’t need the adapter.
