I have my gmail account tied to the mail app on my iPhone. I am receiving new emails just fine and I am able to archive or delete them as expected. However, when I log into my gmail account via my computer browser, none of the changes I have made via my phone mail app are syncing back to gmail.

What kind of changes are you referring to? Do you mean your mail showing read, those types of things? If you go to Settings>Passwords & Accounts, and look at the Gmail account, what appears at the top of the account, IMAP or POP>
Yes, an email being marked as read or moved to another folder.
When I go to the passwords & accounts page on my iPhone settings and click on my gmail account it does not show IMAP or Pop. It does say that the outgoing mail server is Gmail SMTP server.
