External camera laggy - low frame rate

I've just upgraded from a 2018 MacBook Pro to the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports).

When using the Mac's FaceTime camera, everything works fine. However, when connecting it to my LG UltraFine 5K (as I was my previous Mac), the camera feed is laggy (in every application).

The frame rate is really low and erratic - ranging from one frame per second to even fewer.

My previous Mac worked fine with the same monitor.

I've tried:

Using a different Thunderbolt port on the Mac to connect to the display.

Resetting the Mac's PRAM and SMC.

Creating and testing with a new user.

Reinstalling 10.15.4.

Checking for firmware updates for the external display.

all to no avail.

I can't seem to fix the issue, nor can I find any suitable help online.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Sorry, that may be your experience but your presumption of the peripherals being disabled is nonsense.

The USB hubs in the monitor and attached peripherals, internal and external, are detected just fine. The issue with juddering video and audio from the camera and mic remains but the USB buses themselves are just fine under 10.15.6 as they were on 10.15.5 and earlier.

Exact same issue. I was using a 2017 MBP 13" and had to upgrade to the 2020 earlier this week due to a battery issue. As soon as I began using the new computer with my 27" LG Ultrafine display, I noticed lag and frame rate issues with the camera. This never happened with my previous computer.

I've been on the phone with Apple for the past 3 days running all the troubleshooting tasks that the first poster mentioned. The case is being escalated, but the most recent specialist I talked to claimed that any followup actions are unlikely since the issue relates to a third party hardware. Super frustrating.

Apple haven’t given me the same response. It still sounds hopeful to me - they say they’re looking in to it, though they have said this for a while (and it’s meant that my external webcam has remained unusable for all of lockdown).

I did contact LG early on. They told me that they’d received a few calls at the time, but they don’t believe it to be their issue. I’d be inclined to agree with this, considering the only hardware change was the MacBook Pro; the monitor was working perfectly fine with the previous model.

Can anyone confirm whether or not the issue is fixed with macOS 10.15.7? The more annoying issue for me, which I think was introduced with 10.15.6, is that macOS regularly freezes and usually also crashes when I connect it to the LG screen. It doens't happen if you first reboot the MacBook, but as soon as you disconnect it from the screen and let the MacBook sleep, macOS will crash if you try to reconnect it to the screen.

Updated to 10.15.7 and did a LG monitor software update. No change. Also the USB camera I bought to overcome this issue is not recognised as being connected if one disconnects and reconnects the MacBook or when switching between apps. One has to re-start the MacBook for the USBs connected to the monitor to be recognised. Hugely inconvenient and a real disappointment. Apple seems to have done nothing about this. Do they even read these discussions? Not sure what the point is.....

Sorry Dave in SCV, it appears I confused you with "rjscored" as I thought Big Sur had helped, but reading your post again that is clearly not the case. Thanks for confirming your version anyway.

rjscored - can you tell us which version monitor you have??? Exciting that Big Sur resolved your issues, but sounds like that may be monitor version dependent. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

I also have the exact same problem and was hoping that updating to Big Sur will help. But it does not!

Everything worked perfectly with my old MacBook Pro 13" from 2016 and since I switched to the latest (Intel) MacBookPro 13" 2020, the camera on my LG Ultrafine 5K is super laggy and almost unusable in video calls.

I might have one of the earliest LG Ultrafine's (27MD5KA) bought end of 2016 / early 2017.

This issue is really annoying and I hope someone from Apple is reading this Thread. I can't imagine that this is not fixable through a software update.
