Plugged a usb microphone into macbook air, but it is not showing up in the sound preferences. The only input listed is the internal/built-in mic. Tried resetting the PRAM, booting in safe mode, using a different log-in account, but no dice.

Get Driver from Manufacturer:
Be certain to get the driver from the manufacture and none other. Elsewise, it could be malware or spyware that you end up installing.
