Copying Folders

Does anyone know why my folders won't copy to my external hard drive? It is a U32 Shadow. Sometimes stuff copies over and other times it just says it is copying, but just sits at "zero bytes of 200MB copied"....for a long time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

ExFAT Format is for Windows:

So, using Disk Utility, erase and then format the disk to Mac OS Extended (Journalized) format. Go Here for More: Erase and Reformat a Storage Device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support

"OK, thanks...but why can I sometimes copy files over there and sometimes I can't? I mean I do have 265 GB stored on there."

A Few Thoughts:

  • Probably because when you purchase it off-the-self, it is made for both Mac and PC. But, when you try to copy it over, there are read and write permissions that don't let you open it up nor transfer it over.

  • Elesewise, the hard drive may be failing, or the files have become corrupt.

  • So, using Disk Utility, click on First Aid, and see if it reports back if there are any issues with the entire drive itself.

"'operation was successful"'..drive looks good. This is what I get sometimes when copying different folders over. And it just sits like this without showing progress for 20-30 minutes then I just hit the 'x' Some folders begin copying right away and other do not. Maybe I need to inspect the contents of the folder more closely to see if something is in there that is halting the progress. Should I look for anything particular? Thanks so much for your time."

You are welcome.

Try the following.

  • Run Fist Aid - see what is found.

  • View Login Items: Go To: System Preferences > Users & Groups > Click your Username > Login ItemsRid of Items that are Not Needed

  • Close Non-Responding Programs: Go To: Finder Menu > Force Quit... > Select An Item Open that is "Not Responding" Perhaps something is not responding, and that is getting in the way here. It would end in "(not responding)"

Something to keep in mind is the formatting options available

APFS

HFS+ GUID Journalled

HFS+ Apple Partition Map

Third party software offers read/write capability on a PC.

Are all Apple bootable formats.

ExFAT and FAT32 are Windows and Mac compatible common data transfer formats.

NTFS is a read only PC format that third party software has available plugins to allow Macs to write too.

If both machines are on a network, FTP servers and clients can transfer data back and forth to each other.

Active Directory can be bound on a Mac, and then then PC file shares can be managed on a Mac.
