iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

iOS 13.6-Hey, Siri worked fine in my 2017 Toyota Prius Prime Advanced Edition until this update. Now Hey Siri opens long enough to place car icon on car display but when I ask it to send text message, the app closes. I am still able to read incoming text messages. I have 1) rebooted both phone and car; 2) in car, removed phone and re-synced it; 3) checked do not disturb settings; 4) checked Siri settings, etc. Any recommendations?

If Do Not Disturb while Driving is turned on, then I suggest you check with your vehicle's manufacturer. I've been involved in discussions here with people using certain vehicles that have their own restrictions built into their cars that are automatic when the vehicle is put into drive. Some also send out text messages to people that text you and state that you are driving. The easy way to see the difference is the message that is sent out versus the message that is sent by the iPhone.

No need to get defensive. Did you try and open non-Apple apps? Try Facebook, something that isn’t related to driving. I am sure it’s an ios change. I have changed nothing since updating to 13.5 and it’s Siri, an Apple service, that is denying access. Maybe there is a setting somewhere to disable this but no one can find it. I really think it’s a feature that wasn’t meant to be pushed out yet since there is no way to disable it.

Everything worked fine for me until yesterday, when I updated to 13.5. Siri operates normally when Car play is used, but when connected via blutooth, Siri will not open waze...saying "I cant do that while you are in the car...) while displaying the car icon on the phone screen...(iPhone XR and a Nissan Rogue, 2019...) Apple maps will open when Siri is asked....Do not disturb while driving is definitely set to manual/off. So much for hands free in the car...

Besides not being able to use my phone in the car, I am also having another issue. I can't log into my full iCloud acct on my phone. It just keeps spinning when I put the password in. I contacted Apple in the middle of June & a month later they're Still looking into it to see what's going on. I was always a Samsung person. This is my 1st IPhone, I don't even have it a year yet & I want to go back to Android

Back to being unable to open apps again. Despite being able to do so a few days ago (and posting about it above).

To me that makes it clear that Apple is messing around with Siri in the background, on their side.

Given that so many people have posted, using different combinations of phones and cars, all of which worked prior to 13.5, it’s safe to say that this is something Apple has done.

Now remains to be seen if they will fix it; I cannot imagine they would leave a user experience this poor in place: that’s not typical of Apple.

@Pyrillix ... so, are you saying you have 'multiple' iPhone models, that you've all updated to latest iOS 13.7 and 'all' cannot connect to Siri via Bluetooth Audio?

If so, then this bug is pointing more towards specific car stereos and your car stereo sounds like it has has a 'feature' which invokes this Siri bug when connected to your iPhones.

The bug overides 'Do not disturb while driving' when set to 'Manually', adding the Car Logo to the Siri screen - making DDWD active, with no way of turning it off. A bug which first appeared in May 2020 with update iOS 13.5.

@Pyrillix - can you reply back with the brand & model no. of your car stereo (or the Make/Model/Year of your vehicle). Do you know if it has 'Siri Eyes Free'?

I'm starting to think this issue might be better resolved by changing something on the car stereo.

Also - any others in the community who read/reply to this post - can you also include your vehicle's car stereo make/model etc.

e.g - mine is a bluetooth audio Pioneer / Model No: DEH-4150BT with Siri Eyes Free

Hi,

FWIW, I do not think this is related to any changes on the car stereo. Effectively all this started after an iOS update (13.5 if I recall). Most people have the same stereo in the same car that has undergone absolutely no changes in years. The sheer volume of different vehicles and stereos all suddenly experiencing the same issue points squarly at Apple. Further, I suspect that this is something being manipulated on the back end of Siri's performance by Apple, simply because there are so many people that experience cycles of normal and abnormal Siri behavior between iOS updates.

For example, I have a Ford Kuga ("Escape" in other markets) - it has had precisely 2 software updates since new in 2015, both years ago. I have used numerous iPhones with the car stereo, all of which worked perfectly - until the iOS update on my 11 Pro Max.

We all know what car manufacturers are like (Tesla being the rare exception) - effectively the equipment you get in the car stays pretty much the same for the life of the car. Certainly, I would find it unbelievably coincidental that a multitude of different cars from different years and manufacturers, all containing stereos with similar diversity, all start misbehaving with Siri at the same time and in the same way.

Statistically, there are going to be some folks in this thread have issues that may not be related to the Siri / iOS update, but I think the vast majority simply noticed a problem start at a point in time with the only common theme being an iOS update.

Cheers,

Mark.
