iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

None of the suggestions mentioned above make a difference. Before the 13.5 update, while in my car and connected to my Bluetooth radio, Siri would open any app that I asked to open without issue...no complaints and no car icon on the phone screen. I used to be able to open Waze independently and use it, but now, I can only ask Siri to navigate somewhere and Apple Maps will open. I also used to be able to open Spotify independently, but now I can only ask Siri to play a song on Spotify, and even then Spotify doesn't actually open to where I can view it...only plays audio. I've seen lots of other reports of this exact issue, on various forums, and the common denominator is the 13.5 update. Is this by design? If it is, it makes no sense. The entire point is to be hands free in the car, but now, in order to perform certain functions, I have to actually unlock my phone and navigate to and open the app(s) I need.

I woudn't expect an iOS update in the near future, there is no talk of one. If you are experiencing an issue, then you need to report that to Apple. Use this link to report what you believe to be a bug in iOS. Use this link, Feedback - iPhone - Apple Are you seeing this same behavior with your device as the OP has described? Did this just start? Trying to get some background information.

Its an I interesting world we live in where more people don’t search for problems they didn’t know existed and then comment saying they don’t have it. Haha

The car is a 2017 Renault with Media Nav Evolution.

No Carplay just Bluetooth.

iPhone 11.

All worked fine before 13.5. Now issues like the OP plus no visual of what it is doing.

Sorry Jessica!

"Whether it works fine for other people is not relevant..."

I would think that is very relevant especially if its a new "feature" or by design. Otherwise the folks who its still working for as it previously was would have a bug that it IS still allowing apps to open. if it's supposed to be that way then is should be that way for everyone running iOS 13.5. Just sayin.

I have been having the same issue since 13.5 and have tried everything to no avail. It happens across all of our cars despite not using CarPlay or do not disturb and only since 13.5. I have opened a ticket with apple support and referenced this forum/question. I was told they would escalate the issue and get back with me. So, we shall see...

My support case just got closed for no reason. I waited for the support rep to give me a document with steps to try, they were supposed to reach out to me today. I got two emails saying that they tried to call me, but the could not reach me. When I look at my previous call log there are no attempts to call me whatsoever. This is so shady. I’m currently trying to reopen the case, but I hope that one of you that has also opened a case gets an official status that this is indeed a known bug now. If I make any headway I will let you know.

This is useless information. I have the same problem. I hate this update. I just went to look to see if I could downgrade to IOS 13.4.1 like I previously had, but I can't, it is unsigned. So I can only downgrade if I jailbreak. This is terrible. Is Apple becoming the new Microsoft? Microsoft breaks stuff all the time, and now it looks like I am getting that with my iPhone, maybe I should go back to Android, after all this time with Apple, I was happy with it, but I am very upset with this.
