iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

I have this problem too, any updates? I updated to 13.5.1yesterday and Siri when connected to the car refuses to open any non-native Apple apps when I ask. It tells me “Sorry I can’t do that while you’re driving” huh, you were able to do that for me while I was driving before I updated my phone. Navigation in Apple Maps sucks in my area. I use Siri to ask for directions all the time. Please any advice or help on fixing this. I deleted my phone from my car and reconnected it.

Yes, exactly what I'm facing.

I'm using my Bluetooth to connect with my Honda Odyssey, in the previous iOS(Before 13.5), I'm OK to say "hey Siri, open google map", but after I updated to iOS 13.5, "Hey siri" still working, but when I say "open google map", the response it roughly like "sorry, I cannot operate in the car" or something like that, the siri interface has a car logo.

I'm very sure that I do not open disturbing mode, I'm sure of this.

Definitely it is a new bug and need be fixed.

This is happening on a 2016 Honda CRV, so the car model is irrelevant. This is very irritating and unacceptable. I don't buy a car to have someone come to my driveway overnight and move the steering column to the right side because "it's the new thing." So I expect my iPhone to not arbitrarily change behavior in the car as well.

Apple: return this to the way it previously was. This helps no one.

I spent 45 min on the phone with apple today about this. I used to be able to say “Hey Siri- start route home in Waze.” After the update the car icon comes up and Siri tells me “I can’t help you with that while you’re in the car.” (Paraphrasing). I got passed around to two different reps and got no help. They told me to reset my phone lol. Didn’t help obviously.

Same issue here, except I’m using the iOS 14.0 developer preview beta. Siri can’t seem to open any apps when connected to my aftermarket Pioneer car stereo over Bluetooth. Doesn’t matter whether I use Hey Siri or hold the home button down to call up Siri. I mainly use it to open Audible when I get in the car. I tried “unpairing/forgetting” the Bluetooth connection and repairing to see if maybe I could get Siri to forget that it’s a car stereo, no luck.

I will submit feedback as well. I’m afraid that it’s an intentional change on Apple’s part since it’s a step in the wrong direction for me. Now I have no choice but to look at the display to use otherwise handsfree apps.

Reported to äpple! Same problems as everyone on here, 13.5 stopped Siri from opening apps in my Chevy Colorado. No updates available from Chevy. Thanks apple. Going to buy a different phone if this is not fixed. Point of hands free is that it works. Tried to download iOS 13 and it won’t let me go back. Tried the hard reset, the blue tooth disconnect and reconnect, Everything on here. Incredibly frustrating!!!! Apple please fix!!

I have the latest update and I am still having the same problem. My do not disturb is off and I am connecting via Bluetooth. I do not have Apple car play.

The same thing occurs in both my cars. One is a Toyota Corolla and the other a Subaru WRX. Started with the 13.5 update but has not improved with the 13.5.1. Very frustrating, if I make a call, Waze Disappears and my screen goes black and I cannot reopen it. I cannot open Waze at all if I’m driving and have not opened it. The only function I seem to be able to do is call. I understand the safety of not being able to text, but not being able to open my navigation??

It happens to me in all three of our family cars (bmw, Cadillac and Kia) sI it’s clearly not an auto firmware issue. Happens since 13.5 update. I have called numerous times in this. They open a case, then it mysteriously gets closed without resolution...so I reopen again. I have sent video and provided everything they have asked...to no avail. Not even a call back.

That's the same screen I get after the update. IT IS frustrating since I let my gbabies use my phone while riding with me. and I like to control their volume through the car system. FORD says nope not them... ATT says nope not them.... it happened after the update and it makes our phone dangerous and inconvenient while driving. Apple is quickly losing the love with so many things changing in update that should be USER chosen. It there any help to change this stupid feature back. I can't navigate this way.
