iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

You're absolutely right. That's why I decided to just stop commenting and one day it will magically fix itself with no comment or acknowledgement from Apple. They know it's an issue; we know it's an issue, but it seems the norm for large companies to only acknowledge these things if they make the press. This isn't a big enough issue to do that so it will simply be fixed at some point in an update.

The issue occurs if you are parked, if your car is not running and that is unacceptable for folks like me who are in business and research a client before cold calling or do other tasks in my car that can be done hands free i.e. send a dictated email etc. I don't drive and do things on my phone but since I travel my car is my office and I have to try to be productive. It is idiotic for my phone not to be able to do some tasks when I am not driving my car.

I'm having the same issue. Nothing has changed with my car or stereo but when my phone updated to IOS 13.5.1 Siri won't open spotify "because I'm in my car". Yes that's exactly why I want Siri to open spotify so I don't have to touch my phone while I'm driving. I have Do Not Disturb while driving set to Manual as always. I connect to a Sony bluetooth headunit which has worked fine with Siri until now. Very annoying and dangerous that I now have to touch my phone to open spotify.

Apple will not get back to the person who spent hours with me trying to fix the problem. Evidently something they did in the update is causing this. I am leaving apple for my phone... if they screw around with my ipad and macbook we will stop using them as well. I can't sit in my car and have lunch and catch up on things hands free anymore. Apple has betrayed us. I won't go quietly.

Is anyone here part of the Apple beta program? 13.6 beta 3 came out a few days ago - does the issue persist? If I have time in the next few days, I might sign up for the beta program and report the bug there if it hasn't been resolved in 13.6 beta 3 already. Maybe we can have the issue acknowledged and resolved if a bunch of us joined the beta program and reported it that way.

This update is NOT HELPFUL! Why can’t I use Siri while driving? Isn’t the point of Siri is so we don’t have to search our phones manually while driving? Please update! Do not try to help me by restricting my use of Siri. It almost makes me think you’re going to make it where I can’t use my phone at all while in the car.
